CC - Jay Gruden - ESPN 96.1

Submitted by brewandbluesaturdays on

Listening to Sean Beligian on ESPN 96.1 and he is talking to Jeff Risden about the lions game. At the end of the conversation Risden stated the Michigan search party heas reached out to Jay Gruden and Gruden expressed some interest in the position. I personally buy this 0/10 as a possibility. But take it FWIW. Maybe Cowherd's super secret name?

Edit 1: - If you didn't know - Beligian is the ESPN station's local guy here on the west side of the state in Michigan. Covers mostly greater Grand Rapids area.

Hi friend, didn't know we had another 96.1 listener on the board.

I heard that just now, also, but just kind of laughed it off.

more than that.  In a very Matt-Shepardish way, when he does actually give an opinion, it is usually horribly misguided and he does not waiver.  He often mocks callers who are actually correcting him or telling him why he is unequivocally wrong about something.

I have to disagree, I think he is terrible.  Perhaps he has improved since his days at the Fan.  If he is now an option maybe I will take another listen.  God knows the alternatives are not great either.

Your correct about his opinions being misguided. Years ago, for example, he was opining about Rich Rod making mistakes recruiting Sam McGuffie, a small back that couldn't handle the Big Ten. Problem is, he was ignoring basic facts such Sam McGuffie committed and signed with Michigan well before Rich Rod was even in the picture.

I remember when I use to head up to Michigan Stoney and Wojo were on the Fan, must of been mid and late 90s. WRIF use to have a midnight sports show with Albom and Stoney back in the 80s. Only other place to find sports news was WJR and JP back in the 70s.

I used to love Sean, but haven't listened in a long time, mostly because of his Sparty love and he can't get beyond certain topics (calling teams "cute" and ripping the recruiting services). I think he needs an antagonist. That's why Killer was great, or Matt Shephard when he did updates on 1130, because they would say "no, that's dumb" and it would create a good discussion. Now he has a guy who has the exact same takes as Sean, so it's pointless.

I must say "skirts on sports" was a great segment back when Sean was on WDFN in the mornings (2008ish). Probably second to Jamie and Gregg's "Spousal Arousal" in terms of sports radio games.

When he was on WDFN in the late morning hours (translation - when few were listening) he was quite hilarious. Not the best with his sports opinion, but entertaining, and yes, he did need someone to aggitate him or to aggitate himself.

He used to play a game that required you to get 3 questions in row correct to win. Besides almost always throwing in questions about the Canadians, when running out of time to get a winner, would ask the callers for one ingredient of cheese toast (otherwise known as Grilled Cheese). To this day I'd laugh at how many callers would get this wrong ...

As for sports, meh, I wouldn't take much with his opinions.

I agree with most of what he says and he seems like a pretty nice guy, but as others have pointed out, it gets annoying how he is always arguing against the "invisible arguer."  For instance, he always argues about how great recruiting doesn't guarantee great success.  Well no shit, who the hell says it guarantees success?  Another example is how about he argues that Porcello isn't an ace and #1 SP for a team.  Well who out there says he is?!

I don't think he's a Michigan hater, but if you follow them on facebook, they love to post day old articles on anti-Michigan stuff.   Gets pretty annoying.  They also once were talking about a chatsports article (LOL!) but that might have been the Huge.  I forget

I'm actually on the East side in metro Detroit.

I used to listen to him when he was with WDFN in 2009. That was when I first started listening to sports talk radio.
