99 wins over MSU

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
With today's win, Michigan has now beaten MSU 99 times. Only one meeting this year. Hopefully we get them at home first next year and get 100 at home. The all-time series stands at 99-81 Michigan.

I would rather not play them again this year we good let’s play again next year typically rematches against a team u already beat tend to be tricky unless it’s Rutgers

Michigan must have really dominated in the early years.

That being said, I never thought Heathcoate was a great coach.  Obviously he did well w/ Magic - Kelser but beyond maybe the Steve Smith period in the early 90s there really isn't much there there.

but U-M was pretty much a blue blood program from the 60's till the late 90's when a certain SUV turned upside down or whatever .

MSU started doing better because they got a new arena in the 90's, Izzo became their coach and elevated the program and we got fucked because of the Ed Martin saga.

Now Beilein has the program getting back to being a winner and capable of beating anyone and should only get better now that we've had an arena wiith improvements and facilities that can compete with anyone's.

i agree with M being pretty blue blood in the period you reference, but OP isn't off base. the rivalry basically has 5 periods

- michigan leads 40-17 prior to the 50s

- sparty joins the big ten and has a 12-4 run in the 50s

- michigan leads 36-25 between 1960 and 1994 (somewhat back and forth but msu only had one good run going 8-2 between 1978-1983 while michigan was dominant for a few stretches)

- ed martin craters program and state goes 16-3 between 1995-2007

- belien era returns to relative parity with msu leading 11-8

Grew up in Big East country but was definitely aware that Michigan was a solid program in the 70s and 80s.  Just didn't know how far back it went.  Also, must have drunk the Kool Aid that Heathcoate was some sort of elite coach so I figured it was at least pretty even for those years w/ the pendulum heavy in Sparty's favor during the Izzo era, although I do remember him getting off to a rocky start against us early on in his tenure.

Go Blue!!!
