#6 Wrestling shuts out Indiana, 43-0

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The #6 ranked Wolverine grapplers posted their second straight shutout of the season today down in Bloomington in the B1G opener.

Indiana was doomed from the very beginning, having one ranked wrestler versus Michigan who has wrestlers ranked in every weight class but 141, 149 and 165.

Indiana's lone ranked wrestler was at 141, and Michigan's Sal Profaci upset him, 6-4.

The results from the matches-

Class Result
133 #7 Stevan Micic (U-M) def. Garrett Pepple (IU) via major dec., 14-1
141 Sal Profaci (U-M) def. #16 Cole Weaver (IU), 6-4
149 Malik Amine (U-M) def. Davey Tunon via major dec., 10-2
157 #5 Alec Pantaleo (U-M) def. Brandon James (IU) via tech fall, 22-6
165 Reece Hughes (U-M) def. Austin Holmes (IU), 10-4
174 #6 Myles Amine (U-M) def. Devin Skatzka (IU), 4-3
185 #5 Domenic Abounader (U-M) def. Norm Conley via major dec., 16-2
197 #10 Kevin Beazley (U-M) def. Spencer Irick via pinfall
Hwt #2 Adam Coon (U-M) def. Fletcher Miller via tech fall, 21-6
125 #9 Drew Mattin (U-M) wins via forfeit

Michigan is now 3-1 and 1-0 in the B1G. Michigan will travel to Purdue for a road dual with Boilermakers at 1pm and then will stay on the mat and take on Princeton in a rare neutral site dual.

I have a friend who wrestled for Illinois and eats and breathes the sport.  He says that Michigan is looking really good this year.  Look out for some NCAA individual championships and maybe the the team championship.

Every word in your last sentence is so incredibly incorrect. I love where the team is heading but the only shot at an individual title this season is Coon or Massa and Massa has yet to return from injury he sustained at Cliff Keen LV tournament and Coon has to beat possibley the best wrestler in America. The wolverines will walk away with probably 5-6 All Americans and a runner up or two at best, the team title is not even close to within reach this year as Penn State will cruise to another national championship.hate to be the bearer of bad news but unless they have a complete new gear that we haven’t seen yet, they’ll struggle for a top 5

It is unfortunate that you are getting negged, as everything you said is true. PSU has five retuning national champions who tend to put up a lot of bonus points. They have won 6 of the last 7 national championships, the only other team to win in that span is Ohio State, which is also stacked this year and beat Michigan in the Cliff Keen LV tourney this year. Michigan is putting together a great young team and has another good recruiting class. However, wrestling is so top heavy right now that a top 5 finish is realistically the best they can hope for.

It happens, thank you for appreciating the honesty of my post and providing more reasoning to back it up. People don’t want to hear negative opinions, especially on their own team, I didn’t want to put a dampener on the win, especially because I am the one that usually starts the wrestling threads on here but the one comment was just too ludicrous to ignore.

On the most optimistic side, I think they could have 7 all-Americans and finish 3rd at NCAAs. Massa is probably the best chance to win an individual title. Coon might be the best wrestler on the team, but as others have mentioned, Ohio State has maybe the best wrestler alive on their team. Not many college teams have an Olympic champ on their active roster. It'll be a race between OSU and PSU for the title, but I won't be surprised if Michigan is 3rd.

Recruiting class does look amazing though. They have 3 of the top 12 recruits overall led by Joey Silva (#3 overall recruit)

Also, just to clarify my comment last night on wishing Skatzka had been the one win for Indiana: I coach wrestling. He was a 4x champ out of our program. I love Michigan, but the home town team comes first.
