2013 banner or vacated banners: you choose

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Simple as the title.

Do you hang a 2013 banner or flip the bird to the NCAA and hang the 4 banners that were taken down?

Why this thread? I'm bored.

My opinion: I think unless you celebrate it on the court, hanging a 2013 banner is pointless. The NCAA is a corrupt joke of an organization whose word means nothing, as evidenced by them reinstating PSU's vacated wins and their countless number of transgressions over the years.

I say hang them back up-

is the real head scrathcer.  How the hell does someone not catch that.  We aren't talking about some middle school rec league here.  We are talking about the Championship game of a billion dollar tournament.  And they can't find someone to keep track of the fouls of the 16 or so players that got playing time that game?

The clean block was annoying because the ref called it before the play even occurred, expecting a foul.

I must have blocked that out of my memory. Of a guy did play with five fouls, that's as much in Beileine as it is on the refs. That's up there with no one knowing a player can't slap a ball out of the end zone.

I also remember that guy with the beard throwing himself into a Michigan defender to draw a 3 pt foul. That should have been an offensive foul.

Hang the banner. That team was so great, one of the best teams in Michigan athletics history, and not many schools have two NCAA Basketball titles. That ties us with MSU, NCSU, Florida, Cinci, Ok State, Villanova, San Francisco, and now (ironically) Louisville for 9th most all-time. I think I'd rather have 1 more championship than 2 more final fours in the rafters.

Then hang a Final Four banner with an asterisk.

It's less fun to hang a banner proclaimming a NC when it is by losing to a team that should not have been on the court.  Who knows what would have happened against Witchita State.  They only lost to Louisville by 4.

It's more fun to be unofficial & on some printed up t-shirts & to just have fun with it.

We don't have a claim to the title though that is any better than Wichita State or Duke.  You can't hang banners for games you didn't win because any team that also lost to that team has the same exact claim you do.  If we are hanging a banner so could NC A&T, Colorado State, Oregon, Duke, and Wichita State.

I'd rather hang the banners from the 90's since you know, we actually won those games.

Hang the 90s banners back up. Most of the kids on those teams did nothing wrong and it's long past due to reconcile and acknowledge the Fab Five given how much the U profited off of them.

Oh and they actually won the games on the court to warrant banners in the first place. Final Four banner for 2013 is more than fair for that squad.

Bullock was welcomed back by Beilein. It should be up to him if anything.

Most of the kids on those teams did nothing wrong

That might be a little naive.

But if all they did is take spending money, I don't really care.  They should have been paid something anyway.

By NCAA violation standards, they were driving 70 in a 55 zone.

Chris Webber, however, had that motherfucker mashed to the floorboard.

Don't hang anything up.  The Fisher era got busted and the school should live with that stain, and Michigan didn't beat Louisville and, as the Wichita St. coach pointed out, it's not all that fair to his team either that they got screwed by a cheater.  So don't hang anything there either.  Something tells me Michigan won't struggle recruiting kids and keeping fans happy going forward with or without some banners in the rafters.

We're talking about a piece of cloth with letters and numbers stitched on them.  It's not a big deal.  This feels like Lions management debating whether or not to hang "Wild Card" banners at Ford Field.  Pointless.

Can't hang 2013. it's not as simple as well, we lost in the last game to them, so we're champs by default. the entire season was affected. every team could claim a title. it's like the 6 degrees of Kevin bacon... Louisville beat team x, who could've had a better chance at the tourney. remove Louisville from the tourney and all the seed lines are different. Burke never hits the shot, cuz that game is never played. and so on and so on.

Thanks, in college sports you're either a villain trying to win at all costs on the national level or a chump who cashes the TV money checks while preaching integrity and academics. I think our 2018 recruiting class looks a lot better if we had an SEC/OSU budget. The real Big Ten has 4 national titles since the SEC integrated in the 70's and 3 of those are OSU's.

And even the academics argument is hallow. The vast majority of college athletes wouldn't get into their chosen school if not for athletics. Even Stanford takes guys with some B's or a C and high 20s ACT. If that kid isn't a stud football recruit that application is auto-denied.

The sham has been apparent forever, give the athlete's the same academic opportunities with lifetime scholarships and allow them to get paid for their likeness. Then we can talk about good guys competing nationally.

We can say - accurately - that no team made it further in the 2013 NCAA Tournament than Michigan did.

We were King of the Mountain.

So hang a banner for that.

2013 NCAA Tournament "Last Team Standing"

Or something like that.

is absolutely perfect, IMO.  Hang that banner, and then make it our t-shirt phrase that the guys wear during warmups.  Like everyone, our goal is to be the last team standing.

You get to kinda claim the title without officially doing it.  Nike makes a ton of money off people buying "Be the Last Team Standing" t-shirts.  Seriously, TM that.

Also, it's great that Nike would have about 3.5 weeks to make that shirt between the Big Ten Tournament and the Big Dance.

The Fab Five has transcended any banners or even the teams and players that beat them in the finals. It adds to their legacy to have no banners.

Though the good guys were hosed as usual, we did not win the championship in 2013. We may not have lost it, but you should not hang a banner for not losing.

In this time in NCAA history especially, M should stand for integrity, first and foremost, as it always has. Even if we know that we deserve better.

fair question.  if the NCAA decided to hand down the Championship for 2013 to Michigan i can see hanging it but Beilein today said he wasn't going to claim the championship.

the Fab Five banners would be nice to see and it was long ago but i don't think you can hang them and still ask Louisville to vacate their championship without being a total hypocrite.
