Smack Talk by Wolverine Bench?

I'm an alum ('82' Engineering) living near Lancaster PA, and traveled to State College for the game Saturday.  After the witnessing the predictable 2nd half debacle, we met back at the car for some post game tailgating.  I was surprised to learn from my PSU loving friends that the Michigan bench players were taunting the PSU fans during the surprising first surge.  If anyone else witnessed this, I would like to hear from you. I would hope the players would have had the sense to avoid smack talking given the season it has been, in all its glory, and UM coaches would put a stop to behavior not becoming a Michigan player.

In any event, Saturday was a great time, even in defeat (although the 35 degree temp in the morning was a little chiller than expected).  State College is a great place to go for a game, especially the tailgating atmosphere, and the PSU fans are friendly hosts.  They even didn't get too pissed when I donned my "Who's Your Daddy" yellow T-shirt, with the scores of the last 9 games posted proudly on the back.  I am not sure I would dare to display a shirt like that in Columbus for fear of being flogged by the classy OSU fans.

When you say "classy OSU" fans, I assume you are being serious. I would NEVER flog a Michigan fan. ;)

I live in an area with a lot of Penn State fans, and I should say that I've never found any of them to be disrespectful or arrogant. They actually seem to be pretty down-to-earth, positive fans. I'm sure some of them can be jerks, just like some Michigan fans can be jerks. But overall, I have a pretty high regard for PSU fans, unlike the fans of OSU and MSU.

I was at the game and stood in the Student Section with my Woodson jersey. The kids were fine besides the occasional prick that's at every stadium. What could they say? "you suck?" No shit. What I don't understand is why they hate UM so much. The jealousy is absolutely amazing. I don't even consider them one of our top 3 rivals, but according to them we are the most hated. To tell you the truth, in terms of my life, I would have been semi-afraid to leave that section if we didn't collapse as usual.

I live around a lot of PSU grads, and I dated one last summer and thus met many of her fellow alumni. They are all assholes, even here, when it comes to football. Outside of OSU, they are the worst B10 fans, IMO. I have close friends from almost every big ten school, and the PSU fans were the worst after App St. A lot of them are east coasters, I think that plays a big role too.

The truth, unfortunately, is that you can find obnoxious fans attached to any and all sports teams....right down to your local girl's soccer team sponsored by the neighborhood True Value Hardware store! I am a Nittany Lion through and through and have seen some pretty bad behavior from some maize and blue adorned fans. However, I find that the overwhelming majority of MU fans are fine people and I certainly saw more of them in State College on Saturday than the bad apples. Best of luck in the rest of your season, this does seem to be a year of trial, but no worse than many others have had to suffer through (see ND, Alabama, Nebraska, Penn State, etc.) and yes, it will get better!

I remember that in either '95 or '97, some PSU fans got in trouble for repeatedly throwing snowballs at our bench. On the whole, PSU fans aren't that bad, but there are jerks everywhere.

In 1995 there were lots of snowballs being thrown.  At one point there was even a warning message that came over the PA saying that if any more snowballs were thrown, there would be a 15 yard penalty assessed against PSU.

Then, another snowball hit a Michigan player in the facemask (I believe *during* a play).  Anyway, no penalty called.  So the student section was rowdy and cold and did throw snowballs. 

About that same time there was an NFL game in NY, a Jets game I think, where a bunch of fans were found on video and season tickets confiscated.  As far as I know, no similar penalties for PSU students.  I tend to hold grudges on these things, so my memory of the event is probably worse than it was, but I felt at the time like it impacted the game.

As I had commented in another post, the student section is a very different experience for a visitor than the rest of the stadium.

One thing I noticed throughout the crowds on Saturday was a healthy presence of Appalachian State apparel. I mean really, some people probably shelled out some serious cash on those Appy State hoodies just to taunt a team that likely never saw it anyway. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Penn State fans in general, and if we were the #3 team in the country with a chance to get a HUGE monkey (wolverine) off our backs I'd be a little fired up too. But why not just get the AA is a whore shirt and be done with it? Why plunk down cash on some other team's gear you'll never wear again?

Ohh... and speaking of the 'AA is a Whore' horse, which is beyond beaten dead, I got an idea this weekend for a possible shirt design.  I'll put something together this week... look for it in an upcoming post.

and I never saw the Michigan Players giving it to the fans. The PSU Alumni and students that I met were without question the best fans I've been around(other than Michigan). Certainly one of my best days watching College Football,loved it!
