Nick Sheridan is the Harbinger of Doom

Submitted by Six Zero on

It's Sunday morning, and I'm well rested after getting home from yesterday's game in almost record time.  As I may have alluded to before, I'm a Michigan man in Pennsylvania, and live only about two hours from, well, yesterday.

Yesterday was very strange, in that it was almost like two separate experiences, one a polar opposite of the other.  It was like my Saturday was split into two hemispheres of good and evil.

I awoke at was on the road yesterday morning by 9 am, taking in the unmatched beauty of the Pennsylvania countryside in mid-October.  I've seen Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and even New York's foliage, but I truly think nothing compares to the fall leaves of the Keystone state, and this week is pretty much prime.

So I get to State College well before noon and it was fantastic.  Meeting with friends, all PSU diehards, we first hit the downtown scene before heading out to the tailgate.  The air was cold but the sun was bright and warm on your face, and even the UM gear I was wearing didn't seem to ruffle many feathers.  And for those that did, a quick 'good luck' was all I gave them back, except for one really rude frat boy who I then got to admit he was 11 years old the last time PSU won against us.  That was fun.

So the afternoon's just a great, GREAT gameday experience, and yet I'm still a little frantic because I still don't have a ticket.  So we make our way closer to Beaver Stadium and I start waving a finger-- several 'entrepeneurs' find me quickly, and upon eyeing the UM hoody, offer me prices to the tune of $150, $180, etc.  Nice.  So I borrow a PSU shirt and the prices are immediately down to $100, $110.  But still I'm looking for something better.  And then, out of nowhere, I see three maize-n-blue clad wise men hanging out on the corner across from the Bryce Jordan Center.  Turns out they took a bus trip over from AA and have an extra ticket.  Even though I'm still wearing the 'State' shirt, they offer it to me AT FACE!!  I immediately rip off the shirt and give the guy a Yuengling Lager-- in fact after the transaction we end up talking UM shop for about 20 minutes.  I even brought up MGoBlog.  So if any of you three are reading, THANK YOU so much!!  You literally made my afternoon.

With that being said, fast forward to gametime, and I make my way to my seat.  After fully expecting to find a seat somewhere deep in the middle of the "WhiteOut" surrounded by Nit fans, there I am shoulder to shoulder with fellow Michigan Men.  Together we stand and watch pensively as our boys funnel out of the tunnel.  Life is good.

The game begins... and we can't ask for a better beginning.  Bad snaps for PSU, and a fumble.  Threet running, for consistent POSITIVE yardage.  Minor's playing like a madman, and Stonum's holding onto the ball.  Even the defense seems to be enjoying themselves out there.  WHO ARE THESE GUYS???

Before we know what hit us, it's the 2nd quarter and we're up by 10???  And you can feel the fear hanging over the stadium like a big fiery Hindenberg.  The "GO! BLUE!' chant from our visiting section seems to be hacking into the surrounding sections like a machete into the jungle.  And the boys are MAKING US PROUD.  By halftime Penn State surges against us, and squeaks in a score.  But at the half, instead of down by 23.5, we're up by 3.  My day, at this point, is STELLAR.  I remember asking to the new best friend next to me, 'which team is going to show up for the 2nd?'  But still, we're very impressed and proud of the team... and my day at this point could never have been better.

So then, what happened??  Well, about ten minutes later, you ALL KNOW what happened.

DEEP DEEP DEEP in enemy territory, just below the crater of white-clad drunken Paternoville students, Nick Sheridan strides onto the field.

And the clock struck midnight, and our carriage turned into a pumpkin.  It was night and day, and every single soul in that stadium knew it.  39 unanswered points.  By the time 110,000 happy people in Happy Valley started singing "Living on a Prayer," I remember thinking that this was a totally different Saturday than the one that started out from my warm bed.

Long story short-- it was very clear to me that the team has no confidence in Sheridan.  The line seemed confused, Odoms doesn't know where the ball is going, Stonum's glue-like hands can't catch a thing, and-- last but not least-- there is NO ROOM for Minor, McGuffie, or anyone to run because there's absolutely NO passing threat.

I'm sure there's more to say-- but from where I was sitting-- Sheridan is like the grim reaper for our team.  When he shows up, BAD, bad things are going to happen.  But, still, for 30 minutes I saw what our boys are capable of, and it gives me hope.  We'll be back.

As long as the #8 becomes firmly connected with a headset.  Sorry Nick.

GO BLUE

i agree. Sheridan seems like a good guy too (whatever that means). but really, there's no way he would've ever imagined being in this situation when he came to Michigan as a walk-on. but whenever he walks onto the field it's like getting kicked in the balls. at the Michigan bar here in Boston there was basically a collective sigh of 'oh well, at least we looked good in the 1st half'. i think every fan whether they wanted to admit it or not knew that the writing was on the wall. the game was still close at the time but when St. Nicholas came in the game, losing in happy valley became inevitable.

I was at the game as well...and the first half was great. I was surrounded by PSU fans and they were all crying the blues. But as soon as Sheridan came on i knew it was over. Then i heard they were warming up Feagin and i got all excited. And he never came out. I dont care if he doesnt know the play book, he cant be as bad as Sheridan out there. But i still walked away feeling good..we did beat them for a half..and if it werent for stupid mistakes and giving them great field position all day, who knows what would have happened.

Clearly Sheridan shouldn’t be out there, but we really have no other options. I currently live in Nebraska and wave my Michigan Flag with Pride each and every day, because I know that Michigan will be back. We have all seen glimpses of what this offense and what Michigan can be in the future! All we need to do now is be proud that our Wolverines play with heart and they don’t give up. Being a Michigan fan in Nebraska is very tough especially this year, but everyday my co-workers give me shit about the 1997 national champion season and how Nebraska would have dominated that game, but everyday I tell them Michigan was the best team that year. I am coming back to Ann Arbor this week for the State game, and I hope that I see the same Michigan team that I’ve been watching all year. I want to see that same Michigan team that plays with pride and heart even though it might be in a losing effort. So for all of you people out there calling for RR head, stop being such ass holes and give the team your full support as they are trying their hardest. All your doing by being an ass hole is showing everyone that you are not a true fan, and that you won’t still with us through hard time and if that’s the case we don’t need fans like you any more. Thank you to all you true wolverine fans that stick by Michigan and cheer for your team in this hard time! WE WILL BE BACK SOON! GO BLUE

I agree man, I live in NE too - though haven't gotten a lot of crap about '97 since half the people I work with hate the Cornballers... I mean Huskers - so I mainly just calmly sport my Michigan sweatshirt and point out that Michigan will be back soon enough while it's pretty apparent that Nebraska's glory days are long over.

The announcers were saying something about Feagin taking warmup snaps yesteday. I don't understand why you don't put him in if you want to use him this year, especially when we were down 100,000 points at the end.

They don't want to play Feagin this year.  He's not ready and can really benefit from the redshirt year.  However, if the defense could have held PSU yesterday we might have seen him burn his redshirt because clearly Sheridan was not gettting it done.  There is a reason he's a walk on.  How bad must David Cone be that he has not taken one snap all year?  Sheridan is our grim reaper and quite possibly the worst QB to start a game in all of college football this year!

Redshirt redshirt redshirt. If you put him in now, you can't redshirt him. It doesn't make sense to spend a year of his eligibility on the worst season ever. Not at this point.

I could have understood using him early in the year when it was clear that Threet and Sheridan couldn't run to save their lives (Threet vs. Wisco was a fluke), but not now. RichRod knows better than to spoil part of this kid's career.

For the 9 billionth time - Feagin had not practiced at QB since the pre-season. RR and Smith both said that they had an extremely limited package for him that would last "about one possession" for him. That's it. They do not play him because he is not as good as Sheridan. Accept that.

chitownblue you are an idiot. i guarantee you feagin is better than sheridan at qb. if anything hes fast... sheridan has absolutely no talent that is valuable in a football game.

I agree. I understand that Feagin isn't a viable option for QB, but with the game going the way it was, it would have at least had some entertainment value. I can only remain interested in Sheridan 3-and-outs for so long.

The season isn't lost. We can still qualify for a bowl, however unlikely that seems right now. And if Feagin can make some contribution that could help us beat MSU or OSU - and if he wants to see the field - I'm all for it.  Very few players are major contributors for all four years.  It's pretty normal to only play a handful of snaps as a true frosh.

I know the coaches have said that Feagin is not ready, but in reality, how much worse could he be than Sheridan. Sheridan is horrible horrible horrible. I had hope until I saw #8 trot out onto the field. At least Feagin can run...Sheridan can't run or pass. I can't believe that Sheridan beat Threet out for the starting QB position at the beginning of the year.

Clearly, he's appreciably worse, or else he would play. He has not practiced at QB, at all, since the early fall. He doesn't know the offense. And his arm, reportedly, is comparabe to Sheridan's.

Feagin WAS taking snaps yesterday, after the safety.  BUT then again... so was Cone.

Yes, Cone.  At this point, I'd be willing to see the #12 out there.

I don't mean to sound like I'm calling for Sheridan's head... if he showed up at my door I'd welcome him in with open arms-- after all, he's wearing the maize n blue and that's good enough for me.  I just think that at this point this is Threet's team, and they're clearly not the same without him.

Hey, I would take ten Nick Sheridan's over one Ryan Mallett, Justin Boren, or any others that left. Let's not forget what he is, a walk on. Not meant as a deroatory comment, but he is what he is. At least he had the pride to stick it out when others decided not to. Also, if Feagin was a better option, he would be in. The coaches see ALL the players everyday at practice. They know what they can and can't do. The coach's job is to put the best players on the field. Unfortunatly, some of our best don't stack up to the competitions best. Let's suck it up, support them, and wait for better days ahead.

Sheridan is a lost cause, is Cone that bad? Could he at least throw the ball downfield and hand off to Minor? Could Armani Edwards Transfer to UM next year to bridge the gap so we're not relying on a true frosh next year? or Do you have to sit out if you transfer up? Just a thought

If you look over the 2008 preview pages, and take out everything but the "worst case scenario" parts, Brian's predictions were spot on. In fact, there's only one doom scenario mentioned that hasn't yet played out: "If David Cone sees the field something has gone very wrong." David Cone hasn't seen the field. But if we're honest about Sheridan, and Threet is hurt, and Feagin is a receiver, then that means... no... Yes. Something has indeed gone very wrong.

Remember when the Lions drafted Charlie Batch, and everyone was saying "cool, we got ourselves a Steve McNair!" No, we got ourselves a Charlie Batch. I sometimes wonder if Rich Rod is looking Sheridan and thinking (as some of us did) that he's got himself a poor man's Brett Basenez. Fact: a quarterback who can throw accurately with consistency and is a plus-average runner is better suited to this offense than Threet. Fact: Sheridan is not that man. Fact 1 became apparent early to RR. Fact 2 seems very slow in coming. Throwing in Feagin or Cone is a "let's see what sticks to the wall" response, which is, in every scenario I can think of, dumb. Rodriguez's best-case scenario for this season was that Sheridan would become a competent quarterback. He hasn't. Is Threet competent? Compared to Sheridan absolutely. He can throw. He can stampede. Most importantly he can make good decisions. He also has been getting a lot of angry looks from Tacopants. And that's when he can hang onto the ball. If you're looking for the main reason you keep seeing Sheridan, it's Threet's injuries. If you want a second reason, the guy is a fumbler. He's our best option at the moment. In fact, he's our only option. Richrod knows having just one option is baaaad policy. He needs Sheridan to get to at least a semblance of competence, even if that means trial through Ordeal. Opponents leave our receivers wide open when Nick's under center, and tee off with run blitzes, knowing there's nothing to fear from the noodly appendage. RR sees this as an opportunity to finally get one of his guys open in space for a big play. Problem is, to accept this, given Threet's current state of health, is to accept defeat. And RR doesn't accept defeat.
