WTKA Roundtable 1/11/2018: A Pro-Style College Lifer Comment Count

Things discussed:

  • Patterson gets compared to Fran Tarkenton by someone other than Craig.
  • Assistant coach turnstile: Enos WRs for now, won’t get coordinator tag until Arkansas buyout runs out.
  • John Gruden’s return to football; don’t be shocked if he goes after Pep.
  • Enos at Arkansas: had a great first year, dropped off a bit, then became a top-10 rushing offense. He’s a college lifer, and there aren’t many pro style guys who can say that.
  • The national championship game: Georgia contained Hurts’s running but they needed Tua to throw deep—and he could. RPO drive opened up Georgia’s defense, would have won the game if not for the kicker.
  • We’re guessing Tim Drevno will stay.

Keeping Tim Drevno will be Harbaugh’s most important decision of his career at UM. Let’s hope he makes the correct decision like he did at Stanford by either demoting him or firing him.

i thought the same thing about Tate, but the difference between today's scrambiling passers is they'll move forward toward the line of scrimmage, and eventually actually run, whereas Fran would do anything to stay behind the line of scrimmage, never giving up his ability to pass. I imagine there were a lot of illegal men down field that were simply never called due to who he was. But this is a good comparison and so too was Tate to Fran when RR was after him.

So, maybe I'm misunderstanding things, but I disagree on the Enos contract point. I find it unlikely even with the Arkansas buyout Enos comes here to wait for a year or so to become a coordinator - doesn't seem like a solid career move to sit around in waiting for a coordinator job when he could immediately be a coordinator elsewhere. That clause seems to be more "we want to protect Pep's career from getting outright fired, but he will be leaving so you'll be the passing coordinator as soon as he finds another job"

On the discussion of the NC game:

The more I think about it, the more that game & the final play was truy a mix of, yes incredible skill especially for a true freshman ,QB but also total, dumb luck.

1)  Bama had zero points in the first half.  Switching to Tua at the half was more of a desperation move that worked, IMO.  I know rumors are that Tua was taking snaps w/ the 1's during practices so the move was contemplated.   But if Hurst & Bama been even marginally better, (going in 13-7 or 13-6 at half time), Saban doesn't put him in.

2)  On the last play, it's 2nd and 26 at the 41 yard line.  You don't need a touchdown that play.  You need 15-25 yards in the next two plays to set up your kicker for a tying FG worst case. Granted, Bama's FG kicker looked like he might have had the yips, but there's NO WAY a more seasoned QB would have likely made that play.  Hurst would have run or gone for a check-down for a lower risk/lower reward type of play.

Bottom line is Bama is incredible talent-wise, but I don't think an honest Bama person would deny that they really rolled the dice a few times & got lucky in that game.
