Ohio State 30, Michigan 27 (2 OT) Comment Count

Short. [Patrick Barron/MGoBlog]

I'm staring at my laptop and the sea of exultant Ohio State fans on the field below dancing to "Sweet Caroline" and I feel sick.

Sick that Michigan threw away multiple chances to win this game in regulation. Sick that a dozen little plays one way or the other change the outcome. Sick at that spot. That fucking spot.

Michigan should be playing for the Big Ten championship and a spot in the playoff next weekend. Instead, they will sit at home as either Ohio State or Penn State represents the East. That spot, that fucking spot, will stick in the collective Wolverine memory for much, much longer.

The Wolverines controlled most of this game. Wilton Speight battled back from his still-undisclosed injury to throw for 219 yards and two scores, an effort that would take its place in the pantheon of heroic rivalry performances had the outcome gone the other way. Speight's two interceptions, however, were turned into two Ohio State touchdowns, and that allowed the Buckeyes to keep it close enough to force overtime on a 23-yard Tyler Durbin field goal with one second left in regulation.

The defense, which had played a spectacular game, looked worn out in the first overtime period, ceding a JT Barrett touchdown run on the second play. Speight responded with a fourth-down touchdown to Amara Darboh. Michigan's ensuing possession ended with a field goal after a questionable non-call on a third-down pass to Perry, leaving the door open for Ohio State to win it.

Seemingly given new life, the defense forced an all-or-nothing fourth-and-one. Barrett kept it. The officials gave him a generous spot, and even though it appeared on replay that Barrett's right arm—the one holding the football—never reached the line to gain, that spot, that fucking spot, stood upon review.

In a not-so-alternate universe in which the men in charge of the game are competent, there are Muppets and joy and appreciation of one of the most dramatic football games in recent memory or perhaps ever and scrambling to finalize plans for next weekend. Alas, that fucking spot. Alas.

... at the refs. But when we leave up to the refs in East Lansing or Columbus or Kinnick we should expect the worst. People don't like us.

So, moving forward. I am really excited about the future. Steel in the spine. Tomorrow better than today. Moving forward to a dominating bowl win over some SEC team. And then, when Harbaugh gets all his men on the field the difference will be felt. Love Coach Harbaugh, Love Don Brown. Go Michigan. The Future is ours.

This.  Harbaugh in two seasons has them to the point where most objective observers will agree that they were the better team, on the road, in the truck stop they call the horseshoe.  I think we will be rewarded if we support the hell out of this team and give Jim some time.  This turnaround has exceeded my expectations, and I think they'll be exceeded some more.  Go Blue!!

If officials can't call a reasonably fair game, season after season, we need to go to another conference for respect. OSU got 90-95% of the calls and extremely generous spots all game. Rarely do we get a decently officiated game. Several "missed" pass interference calls. D. Smith gets his face mask grabbed and spun around, no call, no replay. Our O. Lineman gets a BS face mask call that stops a drive. I had these thoughts since last year, after see Ruddock get knocked out or rolling on the ground in pain from helmet to helmet contact and no targeting call. Yet our defensive players had a lot of targeting calls. We lost key players for a half in key games. Warde Emmanuel and Harbaugh need to meet with SEC for expansion u. I'm sure the SEC Network and conference would like another Midwestern TV market and recruiting grounds outside of Missouri. That would give them a third to half of the country when you factor Texas A&M, Missouri, Michigan. The B1G= OSU and thirteen props to get OSU into the playoffs

First E&H need to meet with the B10 commissioner, Jim Delany.  If these officials are not fined and sanctioned, then it's time to meet with another conference.  Lack of integrity on the part of the officials is unacceptable.   In most games some calls go for your team and others go against.  Usually they balance out.   Here, the officiating was so one sided there is no feasible explanation other than malfeasance.

The fact that you're a Michigan fan and you seem to have a opine about that spot. Does that preclude the fact that Nohio State held at least 3 times on the play prior? Please rewatch that play and get back to us! I watched the game and the referees looked the other way for 60 minutes! It was a culmination of steamy hot BULLSHIT!

I saw that replay 6 or 7 times. It seems to me Barrett reached the 15 before falling back after hitting his OL's backside. Certainly the replay is not conclusive one way or the other, and the ref spotted it on the 15 before replay. nothing to overrule.

when the liveblog went crazy on the spot i thought they were all looking at it through maize-colored glasses.

how about the Samuel run on 3rd down when how many Michigan defenders could have taken him down 5 yards behind the LOS or more?   That was ridiculous.

Speight kept OSU in the game, but i cant hate on him if hes playing with a broken collarbone.

Tough sad outcome, we got to 17-7 and only needed 3 more pts to win and couldnt get it.

Meyer should be branded forever an idiot for the fake punt call, but will it be forgotten in history because they won?

but the referees butchered this game with one sided pass interference and holding calls, and a bad spot that literally decided the game.

Michigan defense was tremendous.  The team played with a lot of heart. I have been watching football for more than 50 years and despite the bad non pi calls, this would have been the second best football game I have ever seen in my life had the 4th down spot been made correctly.  The Michigan football team played well.  Perhaps not quite well enough to overcome bad officiating, but they played well and I am proud of their effort, and sorry they lost this heartbreaker.   Hope they show resilience like last year and finish strong in a bowl game, and I hope it is not against USC, but Michigan can play with anyone.

Tired of getting oasses kicked year after year. Maybe next year shit has run its course. No, we won't win next year. For 15 years we have been OSU's bitch. Recruiting, Coaching, Championships.....They pretty much dominate us at everything. Whoopty dooo, we get Jim harbaugh, and still fucking lose. Now what? Geniuses. Our coach is bitching about a spot, while their coaches wife is fucking trolling him on his Milk commercials. Jesus. Higher education my ass. They sure are outsmarting the shit out of us when it comes to winning a fucking football game.

Michigan has been getting fucked ever since the crable hit on t smith in 2006.

Even the year they won the refs called touissant short of end zone and called a hold on michigan after running it in for the second time and called another penalty setting up a long fg which they missed..

It seems like this is partof a collective nightmare.

The fact remains that UM is going to be at the receiving end of a lot of bullshit calls - always have been, always will be. How about the bullshit TD awarded to USC, even though Charles White clearly fumbled the ball before reaching the endzone? What about the targeting foul in last year's MSU game? But this game was about the turnovers. Officiating sucked - but it always will. Our team can't control that. We had them on the ropes and kept letting them back into the game. Simple as that.

think of the pain from a different sport from a different time.  It's the pain of the Steal by Bird, plus McHale's (foot-on-the-line) three, plus Vinnie and Dantley colliding.  But that pain surrendered to great joy not long later.

Aside from the spot, a terrible offensive line faced a great defensive line and didn't get called for one fucking holding call. 2 penalties, 2 fucking penalties and they still should have lost.
