We don't have a good Pallante shot, unfortunately [Eric Upchurch]

The phonebooks are here!

We'll have our usual phonebook overreaction soon. This post is about a couple of absences:

Canteen's status was known to be in question after offseason surgery; this would appear to resolve that. No word yet on whether that's a transfer or a retirement. He kept bouncing between WR and corner throughout his career, never getting established at either spot. He wasn't expected to contribute this year, although the surgery probably had something to do with that.

Pallante is a bit of a a surprise since he saw scattered snaps towards the end of the year and Michigan is already two under their scholarship limit. While he didn't look like a guy who was going to play much going forward you'd think the program would keep him around for this year at least; looks like Pallante could read the enormous four- and five-star ratings on the wall.

Both Canteen and Pallante were slated to take up slots on the 2017 roster and will no longer. Michigan now has 21 slots in the 2017 class and is recruiting for around 30; it's not too hard to look at the roster and find another four spots from would-be fifth year seniors and early NFL Draft entry.

It sucks to see kids not able to continue there career or leave the program, but I wish these two mean the best of luck and thank them for representing Michigan the past multiple years.

I'm not sure how the Hawkins news affects things but if he still counts because he signed Michigan took 21 players they didn't backdate and can sign up to 29 this year. If Hawkins frees another one up, 30. Michigan can still bring in more kids but some have to "blueshirt," which means they don't sign or have other indicators of a recruitment--like an official visit--but get a scholarship as soon as they show up.

Big Ten limit is actual scholarships +3 to prevent huge oversigning. Does not apply.

... and the legend of Freddy Footwork goes softly into the night. May it rest gently next to its brethren, including the legends of Antonio Bass, Kelly Baraka, Derrick Green, and Kevin Grady.

I remember being so impressed by Freddy Footwork when he was in high school. Bummed it hasn't worked out for him. Best of luck to them both...

one would think mattison took such an undersized DL in pallante, that the hope was hed have a growth spurt.

Damn, Pallante was going to play fullback right? Maybe? Liked Canteen catch against ohio two years back also. So I do know that there is a new hedge fund kid anyalyst coming in or something to play the position of fullback. He looks quite impressive. Kalid Hill is a beast as well. I'm sure both can knock snot out of nostrils but someone entertain my thought here. What if Rashan Gary gets used a few or many plays as a decoy from time to time? I mean, is uber athletic for a 300 lb. dude and only the #1 recruit on every site. Break him out for the Wiscy and State games. You HAVE to respect THAT dive option if he is on the field. If they stop respecting him...boom!

Good luck, Freddy. I will say this for him, he came to my son's school on field day and spent a lot of time with the kids. He was absolutely great with them and left a huge impression on both the kids and the adults that were there. I know nothing else about him personally, but that said a lot.

2012: Chesson, Darboh (2/2)

2013: Dukes, York, Jones (0/3)

2014: Ways, Canteen, Harris, (Peppers) (TBD but so far Canteen is a miss; possible 2/3 or 0/3) Health of Ways and Harris TBD. Could contribute this season.

2015: Cole, Perry (1/2)

2016: Crawford, Mitchell, McDoom, Johnson, (Hawkins), (Evans) (Insert future depth)

Dukes medically retired

York dismissed

Jones grad transfer

Canteen injured, no longer on roster

Cole transfer

We need 2017 to be a strong WR class as well. Hoping we can get DPJ, Nico, and Oliver Martin.

Thankfully they've done a good job recruiting TE's and we don't run a 5-WR offense.

As others upthread have indicated, I, too, am sad to see players wash out.  But for some, it is better both for them and Michigan to move on somewhere else, so it doesn't have to be sadness.  The ones that truly make me sad are ones who are no longer able to even play football because of injury or some other issue that is not their fault.

The ones that make me sad are the ones that leave without a degree. Football is fleeting even if you make the league. That degree from Michigan lasts a lifetime.

I really think it should be a goal of the program to get every kid graduated in 3 years. That way if they are buried on the depth chart they can get two years as a grad transfer or if they are a contributor they can begin their grad program at Michigan.

Good point. Unfortunately, I have seen plenty of college football players through the years never graduate.  Where I currently teach (not in the state of Michigan, below Div 1) really seems more like the last chance U than the Netflix series, because where I am is a 4 year school, and the options are either graduate or make it in the NFL ( and at this school maybe one player every 10-20 years makes it even a few years in the NFL).  The times I most often get to know thesesstudent athletes is when they are failing my class, usually because they rarely attend and rarely complete their assignments.  Sometimes, this school is their 3rd school, having either flunked out or kicked off a team or sometimes quit.  I've had several who were on scholarship at Div 1 schools, even one who was the starting QB as a true freshman at a middle of the pack power 5 school.  Many will run out of eligibility well before graduating and have convinced themselves they have a shot at the NFL.  Some have the athletic ability for the NFL but not the discipline or willingness to take direction, which in reality means they have almost zero chance.  It's sad to ask these guys what their future goals are, because they have no realistic plan, just the dream and hope of getting into the NFL. They were often the superstar athlete at their high school, in some cases the best football player in a decade or more.  In their minds that translates to superstar in college and then the NFL, and it seems no level of failure or obstacles in college disuade them from that goal.  In college, the coach has stupid rules, or "we ain't here to play school" is the excuse.

There are the ones who have figured it out, though, and these are the ones that I have the most hope for.  They've come to the realization (albeit somewhat late) that their best option for the future is getting that degree.

Uuuuggggghhhhh.

If I had 10 seconds of contact with every college recruit in the country my advice would be "go to the school where you are most likely to get a marketable degree".

It's one of the reasons I really esteem Gardner. His career may not have been what us (or him) wanted, and I think his talent got wasted by that staff.

But he got his degree in three years, and worked on his masters after that. Talk about making hay while the sun shines.

Braden weighs 100 pounds more than me and we are the same height. I cannot imagine what he has to eat to maintain that weight. That is absurd.
