Early Signing Day Tracker Comment Count

Seth

Today is Early Signing Day. Here’s a quick list of who’s expected to send in their LOIs to Michigan today, who has already, and who’s committed but not expected to sign today. We’ll keep it updated throughout the day.

Every commit but Otis Reese (who’s going to be a battle to the end) and Kevin Doyle (who’s solid but plans to sign with his HS teammates in February, via Baumgardner) are expected to sign today. Michigan’s official twitter is rolling the announcements out over time so don’t get squirmy if someone hasn’t sent one in yet.

LOI is in:

Can’t sign today but would have:

  • Ronnie Bell, WR, Missouri. Via Sam, because Bell signed an LOI for a basketball scholarship already this year he can’t sign another until 2018 so he went the financial aid agreement route.

Not expected to sign today but committed to Michigan:

  • Otis Reese, OLB, Georgia
  • Kevin Doyle, QB, District of Columbia

This might be the greatest post I've ever seen.

Edit:  posted in the wrong place....damn it!  This was supposed to be in response to UM2k1's post about getting a Little Brother and Vendredi.

Just watched the German's highlights. He will be a bit of a project. He is upright as soon as the ball is snapped. But I suppose there is some raw athleticism to work with.

Looks like Ronnie Bell can't sign a LOI because he already signed one for basketball this year (2017). He will have to wait unitl the February date.

See, whats frustrating about the snarky "we suck" crowd is it puts me & others in the position of having to lay 3 of our 4 losses DIRECTLY on 1 player (and you could argue said player gave us no shot to attempt a comeback in the 4th).
I don't WANT to single out a player that way, even if he's willing to put it on himself!
Suffice to say, like last year, we were a pretty thin margin away from tbe CFP.
So, like, we DIDN'T suck man!

Seems like it's mostly Michigan kids with a good dose of Florida and Georgia kids mixed in.

What's interesting is the lack of kids from Ohio, Pennsylvania and the eastern seaboard (NY down to VA) as those have been some of the main sources of Michigan talent through the year. I would like to think that there are some good players from those regions this year too.

Penn State has recently re-appeared from the dead as a team that can sell itself as a contender, Virginia Tech is a winner again, ND under Kelly remains a force, OSU remains stellar. It seems like their good fortunes would put a lot of pressure on Michigan's recruiting and that at first sight seems like as good an explanation as any as to why this class may not live up to many people's lofty expectations.

Four of the 16 signed to date are from Michigan (the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 11th rated players in the state, accoring to 247 Sports: Hutchinson, Mayfield, Hayes and VanSumeren), three are from Texas (Muhammad and the Green twins), three are from Florida (Milton, Faustin and Upshaw), two are from Georgia (Sims and Turner; but it will be three if Otis Reese signs) and Missouri (assuming that Ronnie Bell eventually signs), and one each are from Connecticut, Germany, Indiana and Washington, D. C. (if Kevin Doyle signs).

None so far are from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, Virginia or New York.

Yet there is Michigan sitting with the 12th ranked class in the nation by 247 Sports. Maybe not great, but it's still pretty good -- pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Michigan might’ve suffered in recruiting this year from both (a) last year’s class having provided a large number of players who were seeing significant playing time this year, even if some of them saw their playing time almost exclusively on special teams, and (b) widespread perception that this has been a “down year” with no wins yet against a team with a winning record.

Because around 15 true freshmen played this year, top recruits may have believed that their playing time as freshmen next year might be very limited, despite Jim Harbaugh’s frequent comment that the best players will play, regardless of their class.  They also may have overlooked that Michigan was one of the youngest, least experienced teams in FBS and that Michigan played without its starting quarterback and best wide receiver for most of the season.

Zero recruits from Ohio.  UofM will rue the day it turned its back on high school player from that state.  Meanwhile, MSU took seven players from Ohio, including two 4-stars.  UofM should be cultivating Ohio, not ignoring it, IMO.
